Root canal therapy relieves you from the pain that keeps you awake at night. It saves your teeth that would otherwise be lost after the extraction.
If you have a toothache that won’t go away or have tooth sensitivity which persists after all possible treatments, you may need a root canal. If you are in Edmonton, AB, and looking for options and opinions for possible treatment, please schedule a consultation with Heritage Square Dental Clinic to determine if root canal treatment is the best option for you.
THE ROOT CANAL PROCESS
If the pulp, in general the nerve of the tooth is infected, antibiotics will not reverse the infection. The best possible treatment for the tooth is to remove the diseased tissue. That’s where root canal therapy comes in. Root canal therapy protects your tooth from further infection and saving it from extraction.
Once you choose to go for a root canal and save your tooth, our dentist will numb the working area and will put a rubber dam sheet (barrier) to isolate the tooth. After that we are going to drill a hole in the top of your tooth (crown) to access the pulp chamber and nerves. Next, we remove the diseased tissue (nerve and its contents), clean and disinfect the area making sure there are no contaminants. We then fill and seal the empty cleaned space with gutta percha (an inert material) to prevent any infection in future. Once the pulp area is filled we seal the access hole with a permanent filling to maintain aesthetics and function.
We recommend a permanent crown after the root canal treatment as the tooth needs full coverage to take biting forces.
